Good evening all!

I've been lurking for the last 4-5 months, Which is from when I first really heard about Airsoft. As a result, I've been feeling guilty that I haven't said thank you for the wealth of information that I have picked up from here, and felt the need to register. So, thank you to all of you for the information you share with both members and guests alike. It is a valuable resource.

Anyway, a little about me. I'm 28, but feel a lot older and act a hell of a lot younger! I am a bit of a motorcycle enthusiast (track, specifically), but don't get to ride as much as I would like - it is not a cheap hobby to maintain, and this is exacerbated by British weather! I only get 9 weeks of the year in the UK at the moment, and of the last 5 1/2 years I have spent 4 1/2 of them in the UAE and Afghanistan as a contractor, for the M.o.D. and the U.S. D.o.D. It is not a job caked in guns or glory - I work with aircraft, specifically the loading and unloading of them - although I get to see (and occasionally handle) a lot of fire arms (unloaded, of course!).

I am planning to go to my first game in early December at F&O's Anzio, when I am next at home. I don't yet have anything in the way of Airsoft specific equipment, as I feel it's best to wait and ensure I actually enjoy the hobby before getting carried away with online shopping! That said, if I do enjoy it (as I expect to) then I shall be looking to buy a GHK M4, and TM P226 E2 once I have a valid defence (which won't be until March because of work). I have read that AEGs make better "starter" weapons, but the whole reason for my interest and discovery of Airsoft is seeing a training video of some U.S. Forces personnel training with GBBRs.

Unfortunately/fortunately (depending on your preference), for me this completely rules out AEGs as to my inexperienced tastes, they are not "realistic" enough for my liking, which was my main attraction to giving this Airsoft lark a go! This is nothing against AEGs, as they have some significant advantages, but the noise they make and the capacity of the average mag puts me off. It is the supposed extra realism offered by GBBRs that has piqued my interest in terms of mag capacity and changes, recoil, and working parts.

But enough of my rambling. I just wanted to introduce myself a little, whilst I continue my reading and research, until I inevitably require advice on a topic that I can't find or doesn't offer up a specific enough answer for me. And again, thank you for the continued sharing of the collective knowledge!

Best regards,

Ben

Thank you for the welcome!

I agree: research, Google, and plenty of reading can usually provide the answer to a question that has already been asked. No matter what the subject, be it Airsoft or something else entirely, there's always something to learn!

I don't know if I'm "tight" or "sensible", but one thing I've learned is that if I'm going to be parting with my hard earned, I'm going to research what I think I want, and then find out what I can about what's on offer, including what I should expect to pay. I'd hate to waste my money on a dud, whether it's a RIF, or a part for a motorbike.

Maybe I'm a little more mature than I thought...but then again, I'm about to start running around with toy guns!

Welcome. Lurking outside in the bushes can have its worth for a close target recce but nothing beats going in through the door and joining in the fun of the forum.

In all serious though, I was sort of the same to start with, but once you handle some of the full metal AEG's especially the mid-high end ones I was easily turned.

I will get a Gbbr eventually but not until I am more experienced in maintaining cleaning etc. If you got the budget get a mid-high end aeg to start then add to your armoury by going Gbbr once you have some game time under your belt.

Just remember that you can put 30 BBs in a midcap magazine if you wanted.... You can't put 130 BBs in a gas mag when you are frustrated at an inability to take on a 13yr old kid with a bright orange gun and 7 x 450 BB hi-cap mags!

Thank you K@rl. I'm not sure an HPA would be my thing, but I'll never say never. The extra work of a GBBR certainly doesn't put me off. Just like my track bike, it's not just the actual use that interests me, it's the taking apart, maintaining it, and putting it back together. Maintenance appears to be not too dissimilar to that of a real firearm.

This is true- a very valid point, and one of the major advantages I've seen with AEGs! As I haven't committed to buy anything, (and don't plan to until March at the earliest) I still have plenty of time to look around, ogle players weapons when I go to play, and possibly have a look in-store somewhere before the plunge is taken. Whilst I am 90% decided on a GBBR over an AEG, I don't have my heart set on anything just yet, as I don't want to make a mistake and buy something I regret. That being said, I am the type that can't help count rounds in a film, and immediately get annoyed when actors appear to have "Hollywood" magazines! I'm not sure I'd allow myself to load more than a few over the real capacity of the RS counterpart!

I'm hoping I'll gain some, albeit possibly brief, insight or experience with an AEG whilst I am hiring equipment. At the very least I hope I will be able to find out whether the noise an AEG makes is something I could live with. If I were to get on well with them, the first thing that springs to mind is I'd save a fortune on mags! As you say, getting hands-on with both GBBRs and AEGs will help greatly, and this is something I will definitely be doing before throwing money at a vendor. As PT247 alluded to, I can decide on how much capacity is utilised in an AEG magazine, but it doesn't quite work like that on a GBBR.

One thing to keep in mind using hire guns is they normally(not always) range from knackered to just about shoots in a straight line. Whilst GBBRs don't suffer from motor noise, there is a big difference in sound between AEGs so it would be quite easy to think one sounds horrible whilst another sounds decent. Judging a hire gun against one that's been taken care of is a bit like judging a car based on driving one that's been thrashed and thinking that particular model is bad.

I keep saying this but at the end of the day it's your choice/money so make an informed decision based off that. Electric and Gas both have their own advantages and disadvantages and that players all have their own preferences makes Airsoft more interesting.

Whatever you choose, have fun and welcome to the forum.

I have a pts rm4 aeg. It has a working bolt stop, full recoil feed back and lowcaps with switchable 30/60 rnd capacitys. Dont get more realistic for an aeg realy. Gbbr are cool but not the only way to tick the full realism box :) is a good selection of recoil aeg's about. Pistol wise its gas all the way but for a primary i cant see any real benifits of a gbbr if im honest from the few iv shot.

Dont listen to that shortman! Doesnt have a clue lol

I am an aeg owner but prefer the ggbr. I will have one mainly for lovely looks and coolness but an aeg is more usable. I owned a gas rifle in my first forays into airsoft and it does get you hooked! But the idea of an aeg one over for usage and then ill have a gas to spec up and make into as real a gun a possible when its a toy, for when i crave the realism.
