Emptying the mag quickly means the remaining gas will be cooler and thus lower pressure. Hence a metal slide won't blow back enough to reach the catch. I'm assuming if you fill the gas it then works correctly? Worth checking the slide moves freely when you cock it and the slide rails have a little lube on them.

could be a couple of things:

1. Most likely is that the mag has cooled and essentially you've used up too much gas for the slide to cycle to the point where it can lock back. Nothing can really be done other than using a more powerful gas for this. ALL gas weapons are prone to this in some form or another.

2. The slide is worn on the back edge of the catch and it is slipping off the release. Check it works by putting an empty mag in and pulling the slide back. If it catches, it isn't this or cause no. 3

3. the mag follower is damaged, the left side of the mag has a cutout where part of the follower sticks through the side to push the slide catch on the frame up and into the way of the slide, casuing it to lock back.
