So my plans for a desktop computer fell through and I'm now looking at a laptop more capable for gaming on.

I've selected two options within my budget and available to me at a remarkably reasonable rate and just want some thoughts. The most demanding thing I'll want to run is probably The Sims 3.

Or

What do people think would be the of the two and why?

Cheers.

You can get what i have which is within your budget and it's a Lenovo g505s with an AMD A10 APU and radeon 8650g. It can defo run sims 3.

But what i would recommend for a gaming laptop is the Medion Erazer.

Don't choose HP, it's known to be a remarkably shit brand.

The HP has a faster graphics card, on paper at least. The processors are comparable and the HP also has more memory, looking at the specifications I'd say the HP is the faster computer and if they were similarly priced it'd be the one I'd want.

However, if you're only after running something like the sims then either one will do the job.

I wouldn't get a laptop for it. Reason being you won't be able to install better components easily, so if you're dissatisfied with a laptop's graphics card you'll have to get a tech to take the entire thing apart to change 1 component. With a desktop you can literally open the casing up, take the card out and drop a new one in. Same with motherboards, GPUs, CPUs and all the other whatsamadoodas (I don't know a lot about internal components :P).

Laptops don't have a great cooling system either. With a desktop you have the option of installing a water cooling system, better fan ventilation etc.

For the love of god, don't get support HP by buying their products. If shit happens or you need to contact them, they won't be arsed. The're not built that great either, many have had overheating issues and yet HP has an ivory tower mentality; they won't give two shits.

I'd recommend Asus, Dell, lenovo or Acer. If you get that HP, I will personally come over to your house, smash open your doors, call an SAS team, shoot down your windows, egg your family and pour boiling hot HP sauce all over that shyte HP piece of crap. Then i'd slap you.

Never had a problem with HP or their service. We install their kit into blue chip manufacturers all the time. You sir, are talking out of your arse.

Have a look at Novatech's stuff, I'm a bit biased as I'm good friends with the family that owns the company but they do tend to be cheaper for better specs than the competition.

How do people feel about this: http://www.very.co.uk/asus-x550cc-intelreg-coretrade-i7-processor-8gb-ram-1tb-hard-drive-156-inch-laptop-with-2gb-dedicated-graphics/1310426697.prd?_requestid=354649

I'd be buying from a retailer I work with at a reasonable reduction in price - this being why my options are limited!

NOW THAT, is quality.

My friend has the same one but with an i5 instead and that can play bf3 and gta 4 with decent frames.

Probably a good CPU if it's an i7. RAM is fine and that's more than enough storage. I have 8GB DDR3 RAM and a 1 TB HDD myself in my desktop. Not sure about how good the graphics are, but seems like a very nice gaming laptop.

As an Engineer for HP Laptops and Software I would seriously look at HP .. biased and unbiased, I have had my HP Laptop for 3 years and never had an issue and still runs 99% of todays top spec games so Sims 3 would not be an issue.

Neither will suit. If you are playing Sims 3, then clearly you need a pink computer :D

Mate, the Sims 3 is EXCELLENT.

Haven't had enthusiasm for shooters aside from a quick blast now and again since I started airsofting nine years ago and I'd rather do my shooting-of-people outside, where their pain and anguish is real ;)

As for the Sims 3, hat's some hardcore stuff right there.

Build a room full of sinks and don't give them a toilet.

I've got a custom Cosmos II laptop with a 500Gb HDD, Nvidia GeForce GT 740M, Intel i5 Dual-core at 2.60Ghz each, 8Gb RAM, and a full matte HD 1080p screen. Costed me under £700 at pcspecialist.co.uk and it's on par with a mid-range desktop build and half the Apple Macs out there. Only thing it can't run perfectly is DayZ from what I've gathered. One major con is the touchpad, though, the buttons are integrated into the touchpad, when I first got it my hand wasn't so steady and everytime I clicked the mouse moved around, but didn't take long to get used to it (Was a bitch getting used to it on CS:GO), easily avoidable with a USB mouse, though. It's pretty big for a laptop, aswell. About 18 or 19 inches, so you'll need a sorta large bag for it if you're carrying it around alot. All in all the pros heavily outweight the cons for me, and I heavily reccommend this build. My only regret is not paying an extra £30-£50 for a 1Tb HDD rather than 500Gb.

Yeah, most non-MacBook laptops tend to be pretty big. My MacBook's got a 13 inch screen and I prefer to keep it in a shock absorbing rubberised plastic case.

With the specs Caliber mentioned, you can run a lot of stuff easily on medium settings- I know I can run Team Fortress 2, Garry's Mod, Insurgency and Ace of Spades, but idk about many others.

(@caliber I've had difficulties using my laptop's touchpad for gaming as to do a right click you have to press down on the touchpad with both fingers. I bought myself a £10 wireless mouse off Amazon and I haven't looked back)

So I'm still waiting on my laptop, but I thought I'd offer up a link to the specs I've ended up with:

http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-x550ldv-xo552h-intel-core-i7-4500u-8gb-1tb-15-6--windows-8-1-9LTH.html

The processor named in the specs is an i7-4510u but I'm pretty sure mine will come with the 4500u (which is also in the URL and top of the page - if it's the 4500 I'm getting 1.8ghz instead of 2.0ghz) though I'm not sure that will have a huge impact for my purposes.

I've paid a total of about £500 for it through a company I work with, online I found it in various places ranging from online catalogues to amazon and a price range of £580-800 (which demonstrates a wild degree of cheekiness on the part of certain retailers).

I've also splurged for one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SteelSeries%C2%A0Diablo-III-Mouse-PC-Mac/dp/B005L38QK2/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1407188939&sr=1-1&keywords=steel+series+diablo

Which I know is probably overpriced for being in association with Diablo 3 (which I have never and don't ever intend to play), but I cant help myself when I see pretty things.

I'm also going to pick up a set of these for use when gaming:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Marshall-Major-Headphones-Mic-Black/dp/B00590GH8K/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1407251805&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=marshall+major

Theyre not built for gaming, but they're beautiful, hard-wearing and my last pair gave awesome sound quality - only ending their life when they fell into the hands (or should that be paws?) of Oscar The Destroyer. So for £50 they'll do me fine for gaming/general use around the house unless I can find some prettier wireless headphones for the same price.

Mouse is okay.

Headphones seem a bit placebo.

I would cancel and buy these http://www.amazon.co.uk/AKG-K550-High-Performance-Closed-Back-Headphones-Black/dp/B005CNR7B0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407328733&sr=8-1&keywords=akg+550 and a fiio e10 to go with it. but thats my own opinion :)
