Airsoft Can Benefit Real Steel Shooting

Just yesterday, I had my trials to join my school's rifle club (yes, it's really that awesome).

There were 10 applicants all together including me.

I am 15 as of now, there a guy who was 14 and 8 other kids who were 12 or 11.

I arrived first outside the building where the shooting was going to take place. A few min later, a 14 year old came; he's a pretty cool guy. Then minutes later, 2 kids with ice cream cones came along.... they looked retarded. Then sometime later, the others joined.

So, you may be wondering, "Were those kids really retarded thinking it was like Call of Duty?"

Well, yes. The first thing we did was to test our trigger pull. The instructor told us to squeeze the trigger very lightly as it does not take much pressure to fire the gun.

The gun was a bolt action rifle; not a model of any particular gun, but a sporting rifle.

The instructor cocked the gun, told the first kid to come up. "Pull the trigger lightly."

The kid pulled the trigger very hard, like it was some fps video game.

The instructor set the gun again, "Pull the trigger more lightly this time." But still the kid did the same thing. So...... after 3 more attempts, the kid still pulled the trigger with a lot of force. What an idiot. The instructor sighed and I could tell from his face that he was like, "What the fudge does this kid not understand about the word LIGHTLY?!"

Me and the 14 year old guy were synchronize shaking our head in shame and face palming.

After some turns later, it came to my turn. And, as I have shot and airsoft gun before, I squeezed the trigger very, very lightly, until the point where one more little movement and "CLICK". the firing pin went.

Then the instructor said, "We have our new star pupil!"

I felt really special.

Then after some more failed attempts of understanding the word "lightly" with other Call of Duty kids, we went onto shooting the rifles!

So!

I had a woman instructor and she told me to lie down..... OoOoOoOoOoOohhhh, no, don't think of that you dirty boy.

She then told me to put my left elbow out and place it on the ground... stop thinking about that.

Since it was out first try, we had cushions to take the weight of the rifle at the front. So she carefully place the rifle in my hands whilst lying down..... really, stop being dirty.

She then told me to aim down the sights and told me how to aim with them.... "Center the two circles onto the target"..... yeh.... that's it.

And it wasn't that hard surprisingly.... My AK47's sights weren't exactly easy to use either since one little movement can alter the accuracy a lot. But yeh, lined up and she told me to notice that when I breathe out, the sights go up and when i breathe in, the sights go down and to take account of that.

After that we............ PPPPPOOOOOOWWWW!!!!!!

A shot came from some little kid's rifle. That shot scared the living life out of me; it was very loud considering it was indoors. I then knew how loud a .22 cal would sound.

The woman then pulled back the bolt..... oooohhh, don't think about it that way...

Then she took about a .22 bullet and honestly, it's tiny, loaded it into the gun and pushed the bolt back forward.

She then told me to, in my own time, fire then gun at the target, which was 75 feet away and was 3 inches wide......

I looked through the sights and took a while before finally putting my finger on the trigger and one the way.... i asked a few questions about how to aim using the sights again....

"Do the circles need to touch each other?" YOU DIRTY BOY

"Does the target need to touch any part of the circle?" Stop it you shakespearean pervert. (If you get the humor)

"How do i adjust the sights?"

She told me the target has to be in the middle of the front circle, then that circle has to be in the center of the rear sight's circle...

And it was a little harder than I thought trying to do that and my arm was getting numb..... You pervert, don't jerk off.

So I did what i could and fire the round..... The recoil isn't shoulding crushing but it's definity enough to know that you've shot something!

I repeated that process 5 times, each time taking a very long time until I fired the gun; other Call of Duty kids wanted to fire as quickly as possible. Then, after shooting 10 rounds, 5 at each target, we all went to see our results.

I looked at other people's target and they are shyte, awfully shyte. Shots went completely off the target and grouping were no were near close together.

This is proof that playing Call of Duty doesn't mean you're a good shooter in real life, stupid kids. It just means you'll be a cocky arsehole.

The instructors weren't looking for hitting the bullseye 10 out of 10 but were looking for the groupings to be closed together as possible. And mine were certainly the best, shot were at least 3/4 of an inch together and one that was close to being 1/2 inch grouping but a quater of the bullet was out. Dirty boy.

So yeh, shooting airsoft guns do help accuracy with other rifles. I feel so proud on my first try. I feel like I can get into the SAS easily now.

You guys are such dirty people, you've probably jerked off by now just by reading that text.

Good luck with your target shooting, I really enjoyed my time in my Cadet Shooting team. Accuracy comes with groupings, the smaller the groupings the more accurate you will be in the long run, it takes a long time and lots of practice to get very good at target shooting but the basics are just so stupidly basic that most people don't even realise. I'm sure your instructors will go over this stuff but.....

A good sling setup when firing is important, it helps to distribute the weight of the rifle, you are more stable and can hold the rifle in the same position for ages comfortably.

Shooting a small calibre well translates directly to large. We practiced with .22 twice a week 20 or 30 rounds a time at 25 or 30m. Then in comps we shot 7.62 at 600m, it should feel exactly the same.... apart from the epic noise and recoil.

A smooth slow trigger pull is essential to good shooting, a fraction of a mm from a jerked pull translates to a massive change to the barrel of the rifle.

A solid base to your shooting is vital, so elbows apart, the thin skin ( no muscle) directly on the shooting mat or in your elbow pads ( we only used these for the 7.62).

Be honest with your spotter. If it is a bad shot ( you'll know when you have jerked the trigger or the site picture wasn't perfect) say it was bad and why. The spotter will give you sight adjustments and if you don't tell them it was a bad shot they might adjust you the wrong way. Your aim in this is to shoot consistently, exactly the same every time, become a creature of habit, when you know something is wrong and your head isn't in it then say so. IE don't change where you aim, always aim at the same place then adjust the sights so they line up.

Your worst shot is normally the last one, it is normally one the shooter rushes, or they relax too much.

Anyway, good luck and enjoy yourself, I had a blast.

And as soon as you're 18, leave that rimfire behind and go for man stuff ^_^ Airsoft is great for demystifying guns, teaching gun safety and responsibility and trigger discipline. If all you your attitude about guns comes from video games and gangsta films, you'd spend your time shooting from the hip sideways (innuendo, you say?). Plain etiquette says you shouldn't point the muzzle end at people, treat all guns as if they are loaded until you have been shown clear, and keep your guns bagged until you are at the safezone/point, but, believe it or not, most people aren't actually that aware of these basic rules.

At least with airsoft you can aim off beyond 70 mils from your target, and probably still hit something you intended!

Well that was disappointing... ;)

Haha, jk.
Do you go to some sort of private school? The thought of my school having a shooting team makes me giggle :L
The amount of injuries would be unreal :L

I've been shooting for 2 years now, mainly 5.56mm but I do get some 7.62mm and .22 shoots now and again. Last weekend I did a shoot on an L86 as part of a company shooting selection- utterly awesome. Had to fire in 3 round bursts for accuracy but it was pretty cool, seeing as we don't use the SUSAT on normal L98A2 rifles.

Advice I would give to you;

  • Try to disturb your shooting position as little as possible- I began shooting with the No.8 .22 Lee Enfield conversion, and they only loaded one round at a time. Easy rifle to shoot, annoying when it comes to loading as you can accidentally move your supporting elbow sometimes. My coach has started to mark out the position of my elbow to reduce that.
  • Watch your trigger pull and follow through- I botched a shoot in a county competition last year because of that, it cost my team 3 points but we still came 1st. Make sure that the pull is smooth (you're lucky with the single stage triggers on sporters, I usually have to deal with double stage on assault rifles) and that you hold the trigger and rifle in the same place for at least 2-3 seconds post shot.
  • Push those little .22s right into the chamber before pushing the bolt home- the lead bullets are quite soft and will mark if done improperly, resulting in a dodgy flight path. I've had fliers from perfectly good grouping because of this.
  • Breathing- there's 2 ways to do this; breath in, hold breath and squeeze trigger; or squeeze trigger a little way while breathing in, and release the shot while breathing out. I tend to use the last method, but it's down to preference.
  • As other people have said, slings (if you use them). If they aren't adjustable, wrap it round your left arm's wrist until it's tight but comfortable. If it is adjustable, make it as tight as possible, then slide your hand in between the sling and the handguard
  • Position- angle your legs and torso slightly away from the direction your rifle is pointing, so that it's more natural; this means your rifle's trigger mech. is further back from the supporting elbow (usually depends on the length of the rifle)

That's my 2p. Have fun on the range, and listen to your coach!

WOW what a read.

Nice long post about how great you are at shooting and how bad everyone else was.

Be careful about using the word retard you may get peoples backs up......................I shall stop there before i write something that may get in in trouble......

i believe these are the currant marksmanship principles.

a. The position and hold must be firm enough to supprt the weapon.

b. The weapon must point naturally at the target without any undue physical effort.

c. Sight alignment and the sight picture must be correct.

d. The shot must be released and followed through without undue disturbance to the position.

i love shooting. i think my fav was the lee enfield .303. i had moved about a foot backwards after 5 rounds. 2nd the M1 i fires the other day withbits satisfying ping after 8 rounds and 3rd is a winchester with the lovely pump action.

Just noticed your comment about the recoil.

You say you were using .22s?

Well they have pretty much no recoil, all you feel is a vibration from the powder igniting.

And that part about your grouping?

You got a 3/4 inch grouping on your first shoot?

This thread seems extremely legit.

And I spent my time giving you tips!

Yeah, my first thought was "moderate" too. Sorry Friz, after speed reading the start & everyone's comments, I just can't be arsed going through your whole post. Next time please just write what you want to talk about - if you want to fuck about with formatting, underline paragraph headings, bold section headings, use italics to highlight sections or words for emphasis... too much format puts people off the info.

Tahoma or Verdana are easily read screen fonts which underline intelligibly, italic ok, and don't blob up when bolded, even on small screens. As sans serif fonts, they're not so good for printout if the size is less than 14.

For usual A4 page text of size 12 or

10, use a serif font like Georgia or Times New Roman...

...because the 'feet', or serif, make it easier for the eye to follow each line of text.

Also it's best not to mix text sizes or fonts on a single line, unless there is a very good reason,

because that changes the height between lines which can confuse the eye when reading blocks of text.

As the communicator, when your purpose is to convey or ask for information, it is your responsibility to tailor your communique to your audience's expectations and preferences, unless there is a damn good reason not to. If you are merely expressing a stylistic choice, then naturally you can do whatever you like, but, as in this case, your audience may consider your efforts to be more style than substance and simply not bother...

Time new roman mode, happy now?

Not really. It's still an unnecessarily misleading title as an attempt at humour, it's still a massively long-winded post that would be better suited to a blog (which of course you could then link to from your post) AND there's still no free porn.

Plus nobody uses TNR any more, it's all about the Arial these days.
