Best mid cost carbine/large SMG?

I'm a new player who will be looking to pick up their first AEG soon. I'm looking to get a short rifle or larger SMG that I can use for outdoor and CQB. I've played with rental M4s and I didn't like how bulky they were so I'm looking for a shorter gun. I also don't like M4s or AKs so that's two of the common guns out. My upper budget is about £250 and I'd rather get a gun that will last rather than getting a cheaper beginner gun that won't.

Can anyone suggest any guns and brands that I should look at?

I think the ARP-9's are a lot of fun and the drum mags awesome. The proprietary mags can be an issue if you don't want to use the drum though.

King Arms 9mm PDW. Takes MP5 mags, the only proprietary parts are the lower receiver (for obvious reasons) and the magazine release latch, the rest is 101% compatible with whatever you throw at it
