Baz JJ got a reaction from Esoterick in Using Arma 3 for Milsim Training
The thing Ive found is that a growing portion of our population, particularly younger people read less and less. We live in an era where its getting harder to even read the news; a lot of it is videos.

People absorb a lot more by seeing and doing rather than reading or looking at diagrams.

Arma3 has some pretty good tutorials and virtual training stuff created by the makers. Ive never played CoD or but I have Battlefield and there is no comparison.
The strange thing is that we at Okto are not elitist milsimmers or geardo's. Dont make the mistake of tarring all milsimmers as being the same. Nor are we computer freaks and we are trying to make it as simple as possible so people from our community with a PC, a copy of A3, a headset and a broadband connection can join in without having to do any more than mouse click their way in.

We have tried a few test sessions with Arma3 and it is proving fun and useful. It also enables players who sign up for a future milsim to get to know the players they are going to be fighting alongside, before they turn up on the day. Just sorting out roles and weaponry over Teamspeak when running through a test scenario can be valuable.

An example of some of the self help videos on You Tube which are designed for Arma3 players but which are valid for adaptation by milsim players.

I have Arma2 from before but some of the continued improvements which are going into 3 make it a very impressive practice tool.

We did a Beta test on the Okto Eight server and Teamspeak channel which gives us internet based "radio comms" berween our players in the scenario and the first thing that became apparent (by our losses) was that we were crossing roads without covering each other - there is a standard infantry routine for this in real world armies. This is one example of where this kind of training tool can benefit real people in a milsim game. Our experiences show there are a lot more.

Also, it doesnt help when you try and sabotage parked aircraft on a sneaky night time attack on an airfield only to find you have loaded 40mm smoke grenade rounds instead of high explosive. Obviously a rookie Arma error. In milsim games, we use TAG rounds to simulate the real thing.

We only have a milsim every 3-4 months and many of us dont have the time, what with other commitments, to play every weekend. We have a strong community and the server gives the various forces a chance to meet up online to try a manoeuvre or two. Because its online, you can play at any mutually agreeable time and its not weather or light dependent. In fact, we can manufacture our own on the two large islands that make up the Arma training area. So, in some respects its a boon to busy milsim players with family commitments.
Most of us are with partners and many have families which put demands on our time.

As you know Zak, we are trying to introduce Arma3 to our Okto Eight community as a training practice aid between sims.

I dont know if R6S will be any good to do something similar with the Zoro XM games but we will see.

I'd highly doubt it as they will most likely be on different servers.

Went for the T81's in the end as the accessories made it decent value and also available in a less bright green colour. Just had them delivered so not had a chance too use them yet. I'm sure they'll do the job nicely so thanks for your replies.

Although its a 48 hour game, you only theoretically need to eat lunch in the battlezone.

Depending on your team role, you might need to eat this dug in though (e.g, OP) so normally light, easy and nutricious for the middle meal with more time consuming breakfast and dinner meals for out of game. However, in saying that, many players go for the full effect and do the whole 48 hours in the "zone" and live on rations. Its entirely up to you and the answers depend on what you plan.

A metal spork is a good investment. Its December and the long range forecast isnt accurate enough yet for us to reliably predict the conditions. Be prepared for anything. Decide how you are going to heat your food and water and work back from that.

A rationed amount of chocolate and a few boiled sweets are good to keep spirits up. You might end up having to be mobile so avoid stodge.

If you are worried about any aspect like clothing, provisions etc, then just post up in your team group or the wider closed community group and Im sure your team mates or even the other players will be happy to help based on their experience. Many players have fought Eversley before and quite a few have been at all the Okto games at different times of year.

Looks like the same radio body with different accessories supplied as standard. Good radios - I have the older T8 version.

Make sure they gave the rotary volume knob rather than pushbuttons and obviously avoid yellow.

If you just want short range comms, go for PMR446 radios which will give you a minimum of a few hundred metres in dense woodland (worst case scenario), they dont require a licence and you have 8 channels to choose from.
Headsets and PTTs are a bit more difficult as it depends on what headgear you wear and loadout etc.

Choose the radio first and make sure it has a common type of socket for PTT connection. Motorola one pin is widespread.
Then pick your PTT and headset with this connection.

I would always spend a reasonable amount of money on the headset. A lot of people buy expensive radios and junk headsets.

When BAC launched they came up against howls of protest and abuse. Have a look at the old posts on the subject.
Whatever your thoughts and airsoft politics, I thought the chance to play at different sites and keep your defence intact was a good idea especially if you only play sporadically due to finance or family commitnents. I can understand why a lot of stakeholders in the industry wouldnt like this model though.

We were planning to use gas masks at our upcoming crimesim game at Tuddenham but Ive also heard that the M04 is only rated by the maker at 400fps, so I wont be risking that.

Thanks for all your answers, but we will do it another way.

The M04 and the M50 are fitted with PC fans and the reviews that I read on Amazon etc said that fogging wasnt a big issue.
The GSR is mesh so nothing to fog.

What amazes me is that one reviewer says they shot the lens up close and it was no problem and another says the product is unsafe because they shot the lens and it broke.
Probably different fps and ranges, but you would have thought the makers would be able to rate their products with a proper test or ballistics certification.

How can you risk using one of these products if you dont know the threshold - its not worth risking your eyesight.

I tested an M04 gas mask and the lens does get shot out easily. The simple solution is to put epoxy glue around the inside edge of the lens.
