Got tired of taking my Fiesta where it's not supposed to go, so I bought this two months ago:

    1999 Land Rover Discovery 2 TD5.

(I still love and use the Fiesta, just a bit less now)

I had not intended to play airsoft today; I had been planning to visit either Airsoft Plantation or Dragons Lair on Sunday, but the weather forecast intervened, threatening very heavy rain in the southern part of Essex.

Therefore, on Friday afternoon, I decided that I would spend today at Tactical Warfare Airsoft, near Croydon, a site that I last visited with the lad on December 23rd, when we were both impressed with how it had improved.  It has an interestingly varied woodland part with a number of structures, including some in the base of an old pit, and a CQB village.

In the morning, about 42 players were present, a mixture of experienced players, black clad speedybois, who are drawn in by the CQB village, and a large numbers of rentals.

I took three rifles with me; two of which I intended to use.  One was my MPiKM, to which I had fitted a new CYMA gear box as the previous combination of the CYMA body, Begadi hop and LCT gearbox was not a success.  My guess at where the hop should be set turned out to be spot on and it shot like a dream.  I highly recommend the Begadi AK hops to anyone.  Another was my "built from bits" M4, fitted with one of @ak2m4's brushless motors and a Perun Hybrid; this was just along for testing and also shot perfectly.

After the morning rituals, we set off for our first game, which was in the CQB village.  The first thing that struck me was the mud; it was epic!  Then came the realisation that the village had been significantly developed since my last visit, now being far more complex and a lot tighter.  The game was a simple domination, using a card reader in the centre of the village; both sides had 10 cards, each of which could only be read once on each visit to the reader.  Players had infinite regens on their start points.  I found a superb position behind a fence and a bush, which gave me a great view over two of the main routes through the village; I got a huge number of hits, completely cutting off those routes, without getting hit once.  We won the game by an impressive margin as the other team seemed hesitant to push up.

Following this, we wandered off to do an attack/defence game in the Pit.  Defenders had two lives and attackers had infinite regens.  This was a timed game with the end being when the attackers had five players in the building at the base of the Pit.  I started off with a group attacking the plateau on the far side of the Pit and was shot almost immediately by a sniper lurking on the back of the plateau. Returning from regen, i found that our group had taken the plateau and were pushing into the pit, while the other part of the team descended into it from the front.  It took a while to winkle the defenders out of their positions and eventually take control of the building.

This game was then turned around; I usually defend the plateau but, on this occasion, decided to set up on top of the ridge to the side of the Pit, taking advantage of the MPiKM's range and accuracy.  This proved profitable until I attracted the attention of a sniper, who potted me.  I moved to another position slightly further round and had fun taking out attackers until the same sniper got me again.

We won by a reasonable time margin.

Then, it was back to the village for the barrel game, which is a staple of TWA.  The attackers, with infinite regens, had to locate three numbered barrels in the village and get them back to their start point; again, this was a timed game.  We were defending and I had a set of nice duels with enemy before being hit and falling back to a new position, where I was shot by my own side :(.  Being my second hit, i was reduced to being a spectator.

This was then turned around; we recovered all three barrels in a  slightly longer time than the other team.

All of these games were played without returning to the safe zone, which is a nice feature of TWA.

At lunch time, the morning-only players left, leaving both sides significantly reduced; after lunch the teams were rebalanced and we restarted with an interesting game.  Each team had a base in the woods with a smoke grenade wired up to a remotely controlled detonator; two remote controls, one for each team, were hidden in the woods.  The teams had to find their remote, take it back to their base and, hopefully, set off the grenade in the opponent's base; the catch was that each remote had two unmarked buttons, one would set off the grenade in the opponent's base, while the other would set off the one in your own base.  This was a hard fought game with some great firefights, which ended with our opponents setting off the grenade in our base :(.

After this game, a number of players left, leaving us somewhat outnumbered; however, only slightly daunted, we set off to get two flags to the far end of the village from our regen at the Police Station; we had infinite regens and the defenders had one life each.  This proved to be a bit of a struggle, but we eventually cleared them out.

In the reverse of the game, I started on the right of the village, intercepting a lot of attackers and forcing them to go back to their regen, before being potted.

After rebalancing the teams again, we ended up with a game around Badger Base; each team, with infinite regens, had to ensure that they had a player or players in the dugout at the end of the game,  In the first iteration, we played from my favourite end and I had great fun taking out enemy players; however, they held the dugout at the end.

This was then turned around, with one of our players diving into the dugout just before the whistle went.

As in the morning, all the afternoon games were played without returning to the safe zone.

Overall, it was a rather good, well organised day of airsoft.  There were a few niggles about hit taking involving a handful of players, which got a bit salty at one point, but this was handled well by the marshals.

    Guns used:
    Morning: CYMA MPiKM
    Afternoon: Golden Eagle AMD 65
    ASG Commander XP18 (CO2)

OK, so having searched on this forum and found countless threads that havent been completed or had some sort of closure on it, i'll end this with my conclusions...
They are not as scary as you make them out to be in your head. The Hype is real but at the end of the day, its just a badass motor. Get the proper thread lock.  download the manual from the website as the BASE motor doesn't come with any. Fit it carefully and like everyone says, "if it just goes click, disconnect it and check it". I left the heatshrink on the motor terminals as I'm a Muppet and i didn't want to reverse polarity kill it. adjust. enjoy. Can honestly say, its a hoot. not the cheapest mod you can do but for pure perverse enjoyment of those small balls travelling, its worth it.

To achieve optimal results you will have to fuck around with voluming

For a bodge, I guess slap the supplied 120 spring in there and give it a go.
Won't be pretty, but again it's a bodge.
I do recommend you do things correctly, it'll preserve your internals and up the overall performance of the gun.

Specna gearboxes aren't the strongest so correct voluming will avoid premature breakages (as of now the piston impacts when the BB has long left the barrel, which means that it'll dump its whole energy onto the cylinder head, which in turn transfers it to the front of the gearbox).
You could also knock a few teeth off the sector to bleed some extra air volume.

Checking them requires you to disassemble the gun and gearbox and you need to test each pair of components, starting from the piston head against the cylinder-cylinder head assembly:
Plug the nozzle with your finger and push the piston, if the air seal is good it'll go down to a certain point, stop and bounce back when you let go of the piston, otherwise you'll hear air escape from either the piston head or the cylinder head.
If it happens, you either need to lubricate the o-rings or replace them.

You will then need to check the nozzle:
With the same apparatus add the nozzle and tappet plate, have the nozzle in the forward position by rotating the tappet plate until it rests on the cylinder head "semi circular thingamajig", plug the nozzle and repeat the previous test.
If the nozzle leaks and doesn't have an o-ring, replace it with a o-ring equipped nozzle, make sure to check the length and order accordingly. Don't forget to lube it too!

Once the gearbox side is done, it's time to check the barrel assembly:
Generally speaking hop rubbers tend to seal perfectly against barrels, moreover the hop unit will slightly squeeze them together so an air leak from there is unlikely unless either component is damaged.
A VERY THIN wrap of ptfe tape around the front of the hop rubber (where it meets the barrel) may help, but in most cases it's not necessary.
One thing you can do is have the gun assembled with the nozzle fully forward, point a torch down the barrel and look through the hop unit feeding tube, there should be no light coming from where the nozzle meets the hop rubber.
If there is, your nozzle might be too short.

Then get a chrono and look for any velocity/energy deviation:
A good air seal will yield very little FPS/J deviation, regardless of the output.

Everything you see in the first picture kinda needs replacing.

What you broke is the valve knocker lock (or firing pin lock) and it's the second part that breaks in an AAP after the hammer itself. You can source an original replacement but at this point I suggest replacing the whole trigger/hammer mechanism with CowCow parts.

Alright, took it apart after today's game and:
The internals are proprietary except for the motor, inner barrels and hop rubbers.
The springs are vsr-like, but half the length and of odd diametre (11.3mm OD, 8.90 ID).
Piston heads (consequently "cylinders" and cylinder heads) are smaller than AEG spec at 20mm OD.
Nozzles are proprietary and don't have o-rings.
Barrels are supposed to be 226x6.03 but I will check this later.

Performance wise it's a hungry beast. Just setting the hops will chew through half a kilogram of 0.25s, it's far from efficient as well, drawing 30odd amps to start and keeping 24A during function, but that is due to the motor being a meh ferrite one.

    The upgrade plan is:
    • sort the air seal with new o-rings;
    • replace the motor with a less thirsty one, even if the overall ROF goes down;
    • replace hop rubbers to get the maximum possible range on 0.25s;
    • [optional] replace the inner barrels to bring the power up closer to 0.99J without putting unnecessary stress on the mechanical components. Alternatively make some spacers to go between piston heads and springs to compress them a little more.

Pro tip for long term storage:
Unscrew the barrel assembly, due to the way it works 4 out of 5 springs are always under tension.

Edit: a full sized, picture filled breakdown and "review" will come once I have upgraded it.

I mean, every Ares out of the box needs, as a bare minimum to keep the gun going for *at least* 6 months:

    New bushings,
    New piston body,
    New o-rings,
    New nozzle,
    New tappet plate,
    New hop rubber.

That's out of the box, no matter what gun or gearbox version it is.

Once you do these things you still have a gun with proprietary parts that can't really be modified without spending way too much.

Back on topic, I did ask Ares about something a while ago and it took ages for them to respond, but at that point I had already sold the gun.

70° mainly because it can withstand high raters of fire without breakages (lips on the 50 tend to fold at 25ish rps, causing all sorts of bad things to the gearbox and its internals).

If semi only is your thing then a 60 should be fine.

    Hey guys,
I know we already have a dedicated section but it's mostly used for site reviews, which I love reading from down here, especially Asomodai's ones, but I reckon it'll get more visibility here.

I'm interested in hearing how your day went, whether it's a simple skirmish, a full day themed event or a hardcore milsim! In particular I'd like to hear anecdotes, something in particular that made (or broke) your day, or even just some venting because of one or multiple unpleasant events, maybe a super long range shot or if you snuck so close to someone you managed to tap him on the shoulder. These kinds of things

Lemme start this absolute shitshow by telling you (I don't care if you don't care, you sit there and read) my day.

So, today was the first game after the summer pause, it gets quite warm here in summer and people prefer to roast themselves on a beach rather than play with toy gnus, I was very excited as I took my new specna for a spin.

Due to the relatively low numbers we invited another club to play with us (which from now on will be called "cheater club" but I won't bore you with the explanation), we ended up being 18 people, 12 of us + 6 of them and some randoms thrown in.

The day started well, with the two first games being a little slow paced due to "the others" playing for the first time in the highest part of our field.

Hit calling was generally good until the last three games.
The first one of these three saw me sneaking up to 4/5 metres of an enemy sniper, who was unaware of my presence as he was focused on pinning down my teammates. Flick the gun to semi and let off a couple of shots into the only visible part, the head. Both BBs impacted.

And this is where it all goes to shit.

The guy visibly flinches, turns towards me and ducks into cover, to pop up later with his pistol, but I'm still there waiting, this time with the fun switch on, and let off a small bursts that gets him right in the forehead. Still flinches and dives back into cover. At this point I'm pissed, I hold down the trigger to keep him down while moving to the side to get a better shot, as we were separated by a small ridge. At this point half a flash mag has been dumped. When I get really close to him, must've been 2/3 metres at best, he pokes out of cover and lets off a nice full auto burst from his CO2 pistol in my neck.
I'm not Shouty McYelly, so I call my hit and walk away.
Game ends and the guy comes out of his little trench, bleeding with visible welts on his forehead. Didn't feel bad for a second about it. Also quite a few people were watching the scene so I didn't even need to say or do anything as it was pretty obvious what happened.

The game after I'm on defense, I set up an ambush on a small side path on the left hand side of the objective and spot a 3 man squad coming my way, I let the first one pass and unleash hell on the second and third guy. The second enemy dives into cover while the third, a good 10/15 metres behind the other two, is still in the open, so I instantly direct the fire towards him. Now I'm not 100% sure I hit him as he was a good 40 metres away, but my gun does reach up to at least 55 metres, I was shooting down from an elevated position and the spread was still torso sized.
Nonetheless, the target at first stands still in surprise and then runs away. Meh. Follows a nice exchange of bbs with my club's president (the first guy) but then I'm overran and eliminated.
Still a bit puzzled by this "incident", but again, might have misjudged the distance but it seemed like I did reach that guy, as when the game ended he told me my bbs were zipping past him. The magic of airsoft and round lightweight ammunition.

Then the last game of the day, we send the whole cheater club to defend a small chapel, we as attackers have two advantages. Range, because we are starting from the high ground, and terrain knowledge.
We split up in 2/3 man teams as we always do, my mate and I decide to go on a huuuuge flanking maneuver that gets us behind the objective.
At this point it gets ridiculous:
We emerge out of cover right next to a girl who was looking at the opposite direction, none of us saw her (new nickname, Eagle Eye lol) until she moved a few branches. On the plus side she somehow didn't hear us. Great, let's spread out now so she doesn't fuck both of us up with a single sweep.
Slowly creeping towards her, I flick the gun to semi, wait for my teammate to move a bit and then I pull the trigger....
Nothing, fuck's sake, the gun locked up.
She notices us, turns around to shoot us but we're already behind cover: me in a dip protected by a bush, my teammate on the opposite side of the very tree she was using as cover. I draw my pistol, pop out of cover and fire 4 shots, hitting her in the side of the mask (from 3 metres, clearly saw the bbs hitting) as she was looking at my teammate. I dive back into cover, she turns around towards me and my mate puts 4 bbs in her side while she lets off a small unaimed burst between us. Note that this took some seconds so she had the time to call the hit, but she doesn't until she took my mate's balls (lul).
The hit was called, but suddenly she starts yelling that she hit both of us and ran to cry about it to our club's president.

I stare at my mate, he stares at me, we both shrug and keep playing. We both end up being taken out by her boyfriend, who got himself into a really cheeky position and was almost invisible from where we were (imagine a huge bush with the tiniest of tiny holes in it and a barrel barely poking out, good luck spotting that), good play by him and we complimented.

A rollercoaster of a day, which started with the best premises but ended in disappointment.

How did your day go? Did you have the same bad luck as me? Did you have a great time?
